Whole Foods’ biggest supplier’s $2.9 billion bid to buy Supervalu is all about its independence

United Natural Foods, or UNFI, said it would acquire Supervalu for $2.9 billion.
The acquisition will help the grocery distributor reduce its dependence on Whole Foods, which accounts for about a third of UNFI’s business and has a contract with the distributor set to expire in 2025.
UNFI’s relationship with Whole Foods has been uncertain ever since Amazon bought the grocery chain.
